If You're a Conservative...Don't Worry-Be Happy... E-mail

Though conservatives have a reputation for being rigid and boring, that status is ill deserved.  True conservatives delight in the timeless uplifting spirit of the Declaration of Independence and its drum beating reference to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. A persisting dedication to upholding this message is cause for celebration – not despair.

It’s a little known fact that the American conservative movement is only about a half century old.  Nonetheless, during that brief history there has been a dramatic parade of highs and lows.  The death bells have been repeatedly rung for conservatives – in each and every case – prematurely.

TheCandidConservative says…

“Anyone standing on the side of reason, reality, responsibility, and right should be sporting a permanent grin.”

Recent history has brought us two particularly glaring dark moments.  First came the Bush-Chaney years where the Republican majority ran America.  Those years were characterized by borrow and spend policies; ill advised foreign entanglements; and tremendous expansion of government.   None of these priorities had anything to do with conservative thinking, but the propaganda of the left and insincerity of Republican power brokers secured the association.  The failure of the make believe conservatism of these years demoralized the right and invigorated the left.  It was this potion that brought on an even darker moment.

Extremes breed extremes and the political pendulum responded with full, if misguided, enthusiasm as it moved from a fantasy right to a very real socialist left.  Leftheaded thinkers, pretending to be rescuers took full advantage of the fuzzy politics of the Bush years and fears about the economy and recaptured the Presidency and both houses of Congress.  Many conservatives became alarmed – about eight years later than they should have.

We are now in the midst of the greatest makeover of government in America’s history.  The most liberal member of the notoriously liberal body known as the U.S. Senate is sitting in the White House.  Government, with its inherent bureaucracy and regulatory heavy hand, is spending two dollars for every one it takes in revenue.  As this liberal behemoth grows bigger, you, me, and the rest of America is growing smaller.

One would assume that such a reality would be cause for misery for authentic conservatives.  Not so – in that the best response to descending darkness is turning on the lights.  Conservatives – true conservatives – by principle and dedication, are exceedingly bright.

There is nothing the least bit pessimistic in a commitment to the importance of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  In fact, such dedication merits a smile of self-congratulation.  This kind of true conservative thinking is needed now more than ever.

History proves repeatedly that no cause is truly lost until one side gives up.  God gave man the choice to determine his own outcomes and the fight for America’s heritage remains in the hands of those most willing to carry that fight.  That power is cause for celebration and vigor – not despair.

The fight for America’s birth was fraught with far greater dangers and negative potentials than today’s struggle to keep the vision alive.  The founding fathers faced loss of everything they held dear – including life.  Conservatives of today face no such impediments to enthusiasm.  Our despair, negativity, and paralysis come mostly from internal sources.  Though our risks may be lighter, out voice is needed now more than ever.  That’s a call for a happy face with a determined smile…
