Protecting America

History tells us that cultures in decline become increasingly dedicated to trivia as they detach from things that matter. This formula for disaster offers warning to an America of increasingly petty pursuits.

One example of trivial pursuit would be men and sports. No longer a past-time, sports are a national addiction and a distraction from much that matters. While it’s true that sports can be a metaphor for life, they were never meant to be a replacement for life.

Men, by design, are made for action – not observation. Watching other men overcome adversity and challenge in a ballgame is not the same thing as facing our own adversity and challenge. Men need uninsured moments to feel like men. Men need to face dragons and find their hero potential.

Other examples of cultural decline can be found as enabling cities welcome vagrants, drug culture enthusiasts, and illegal aliens, yet ignore the almost universal horrific school drop-out rate for black students losing their way to adulthood.

Americans watch over four hours of television a day. A talented pedophile’s death from his final act of drug abuse is more likely to capture our widescreen attention than a talented young person’s death in service and sacrifice to his or her country.

History tells us that today’s blessings offer no immunity from tomorrow’s miseries. Unless a significant number of people are actively engaged in the protection of America’s special character, that character will be extinguished. Good and noble people have never been in a majority. History also teaches that it is dedication and heart that wins the fight – not numbers.

The American Dream was not created by men watching tyranny from a rocker. It will not be protected by men watching TV from a recliner. We can look back with crystal clarity at the connection between declining cultures and trivia. We can also see repeated reminders that patriots stand up, face the wind, and grow. While pretenders wait and watch and see the reflection in the mirror and their country – shrink…

“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.”  Ronald Reagan
