If it takes one to know one, then Bernie Madoff certainly has the credentials to recognize criminal misbehavior. He recently took the unusual step of calling out his landlord, Uncle Sam, for running a federal Ponzi scheme.
The dictionary defines this amoral enterprise as a scam where existing investors are paid from the resources of later investors. That's a perfect description of our current government. Regulatory pretense, crony capitalism, corrupt monetary policy, military adventurism, voter payoffs and indifference to the rule-of-law hold matching dedications to propping up today at the expense of tomorrow.
Though donkeys shamelessly pilfer our treasury through the front door, complaining elephants are equally devoted to the back door. Republicans have a long history of indulging pet interests and breaking promises to rein in government spending. Nibbling on entitlements and discretionary spending while ignoring military extravagance is dangerous and insincere.
