America’s unemployment program has all the attributes one could expect from a befuddled liberal think tank. It’s expensive, funded by someone other than the recipient, and it doesn’t work.
The left has the creativity of a pumpkin when it comes to social issues. Got dumb kids? Throw money and fancy buildings at them. Got homeless addicts? Provide free housing so they can get high out of public view. Got people without a job? Import a foreign labor force and then pay legal citizens to stay home for two years.
Unemployment insurance offers a classic example of a good idea mutated by political mischief. Paying people to be unproductive is about job security for politicians, not workers. We’re thus handing tomorrow’s adults a big bill for this generation’s refusal to live on our own labors.
Current employment avoidance policies reward rights over responsibilities. Republicans have been so busy with crony capitalism and foreign adventurism they’ve failed to challenge Democrat something for nothingism. The result – an increasing American fascination with the European model of entitlement. We can watch Greece to see how this charade buys temporary reality escapes, not a prosperous future.
Alternatives to current employment policies begin with the reintroduction of personal accountability. Employer and beneficiary contributions are exhausted in about 13 weeks. That’s a good time to up the ante by requiring recipients to attend “get a job” classes, do public service work, or consider a job beneath their stature.
A lot of us will be doing the latter in coming years. Three out of four new jobs are for low wage positions. If that’s the new American reality, then we better adjust and stop importing illegal labor to fill those jobs.
It was a personal pleasure to report Mills manufacturing and the former Sonopress plant to ICE. The resulting stampede and management tap dance magically produced one hundred jobs for legal citizens. Immigration enforcement with employers is a dazzling jobs creation program.
After 26 weeks, benefits should shrink as a further incentive to get a job. In fact, paying our own way may make two jobs necessary. Fortunately, the healthiest part of most people’s day is when they’re working. Jobs, not handouts, remain America’s best social service.
In an earlier time, another benevolent socialist, Adolf Hitler, placed the slogan “work shall set you free” above the gates of his death camps. He was lying, but he wasn’t wrong…
