Country Club Liberalism... E-mail

Asheville must like breasts more than preachers. Why else would our daily paper feature before and after articles on this latest liberal exercise in downgrading the culture? As the small “Boob-In” revealed, there’s a difference in what you can expose and should.

That brings us to street preachers. In a self-correcting world, one man’s trash is truly another man’s treasure. In today’s America many believe they have a right to censor the other guy’s treasure because they believe he’s not smart enough to know it’s trash.

Unlike exposed breasts, street preaching has long been a feature of Asheville’s cultural milieu. I remember men and women in the fifties speaking on the corners of Pritchard Park. It took remarkable courage to stand in front of mostly disinterested passersby and directly share Jesus’ message of love and responsibility. It still does.

Times change. Pritchard Park is now the home of free spirits routinely beating out a loud and boringly repetitive rhythm. Their drum circle has also been eagerly described as spiritual.

For some, free speech is a fine thing as long as it’s their thing. Think liberals championing diversity with country club enthusiasm – until they’re faced with diverse thinking antagonistic to their comfort zone. If you don’t believe it, try being an out-of-the-closet conservative in the fortress of homogenous liberalism formerly known as Asheville.

Once one finds consolation in censoring speech, it’s just a little skip to censoring behavior. In the socialist utopia formerly known as Germany, using the slur “alte saus” or “old sows” subjects you to a fine of 2,500 Euros. Uttering the slight “stupid cows” curiously triggers a fine of only 500E.

Speaking of socialist utopias, in today’s America about every new law, regulation, restriction, or constraint on speech or behavior comes, ironically, from the hands of self-described liberals.

President Obama offers a glaring example of liberal censorship enthusiasms. Offended by Libya’s megalomaniac leader, Mahmar Khadafy, Obama didn’t write a letter-to-the-editor or implement a fine – he dropped bombs. That he attacked a sovereign nation for resisting a rebel takeover didn’t matter. That those rebels are mostly Khadafy wannabes and religious zealots who treat women like “alte saus” was also insignificant to our liberal zealot.

The 1st Amendment was first for a reason. It should remain so – even for loud preachers, drum circles, and breasts. Bombing your fellow man? Well that evidently depends on your club’s comfort zone.
