Government is the Dangerous Middle Man - an editorial on Wall Street's occupiers... E-mail

Wall Street’s occupiers are the left’s answer to this century’s most influential political force – the Tea Party. Though the “Me Party” has captured bubbly media attention, celebration is premature. In a darkening world, change agents dedicated to noise, tantrums, and good times won’t have the juice to turn on the lights.

Most people spotting someone drowning in a river would attempt rescue. That’s compassion – an American trademark. To recycle that intervention day after day, victim after victim, and recruit those sufferers as personal mascots would be vanity – a liberal trademark. Conservatives, marked by a devotion to reality, reason, responsibility, and right, prefer to stop the bad guys from throwing people into the river.

Wall Street’s occupiers think they’re successfully attacking bad guy HQ. They’re wrong. Social justice is a demanding mistress. She’s not found at parties, protests, or media events. She makes everyone work for her favors. She lives upriver, closer to the enemy.

Me Party members are right on some things. They’re correct that aging baby-boomers are passing on a dimmed down American Dream. Our young are inheriting an “American Deal” defined by entitlement, greed, and opportunism. They’re mistaken that anarchy, anger, or socialism will reverse that trend.

Crony capitalism, not remotely connected to the liberty, opportunity, and responsibility of the real thing, is the rich man’s version of a professional welfare mother. Isn’t it ironic that wealthy crooks and poor crooks go through the same benefactor to milk their fellow man? Government is a hidden middleman in almost every social injustice unfolding today.

Crony capitalists survive because government regulates ineptly or for special interests. Entitlement addictions are growing because government removes accountability as a fair price for a helping hand. Government enables banker bungling through bailouts funded with our money. Government submerged our economy with force-fed public polices like those assuring half of 2008’s home loans went to people who couldn’t afford payments. Energy dependence, the gulf oil spill fiasco, convoluted trade agreements, our massive deficit, illegal immigration, a failed drug war, social security insolvency, and bankrupting military adventurism can all be traced to government meddling.

Until we get real about the real enemy, a government more dedicated to power and self-service than its Constitutional mission, America will regress. Partiers chasing decoys on Wall Street will get muddy, but they won’t stop the harms. Patriots, like Tea Partiers, with the hearts and smarts to look upriver might.
