Though disavowed by his own countryman, French philosopher Frederick Bastiat stands the test of time as a unique champion of liberty. Two years after the 1848 French Revolution and just months before his death at 49, Bastiat published what might be the best book ever written on conservative thinking. In The Law he stated that "each of us has a natural right - from God - to defend his person, his liberty, and his property". He noted that law becomes perverted when it punishes one's right to self-defense in favor of another's acquired right to plunder. Bastiat reveals the danger and dishonesty behind the liberal socialist promise of something for nothing. There are only two ways to achieve in nature - through our own labors or the labors of others. This gentleman recognized that big government seducers offer a false philanthropy that is little more than thievery disguised behind a banner of virtue. Were he alive today, he would readily note that the Obama Democrat's promise of hope and change is merely code for a plan to plunder...
