If you’re looking for a New Year fear, you can’t do better than America’s fascination with fatal attractions. The list is unlimited, but some of top contenders are consumption, drugs, something for nothing, sex, and the idea of a savior on earth. All of these addictions are deadly to mental, social, physical, and spiritual health, but it’s the last one that should keep culturists up nights. Though the reality Obama has not remotely measured up to the fantasy Obama, isn’t it fascinating how his mascots remain so loyal? In truth that loyalty is to an idea – there is someone out there who can save me – not to Obama. PBO is simply good at tapping into this passion to be saved. Experience tells us that intelligence, political views, and economic status do not insulate us from the desire to be led. Eric Fromm, in his book Escape From Freedom, noted this tendency to exchange paradise for a fantasy – and thus open the door to a nightmare.
